The Lubbock Civic Chorale began in September 1976, following numerous enthusiastic performances by a ''sing-along'' group during the Bicentennial celebration. That first group was only a handful of unauditioned people who had a dream of choral excellence on the South Plains. Over the years, the group grew to a viable force in Lubbock. It successfully performed the works of such composers as Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Brahms. Most of these were accompanied by piano until the spring of 1985 when the Chorale was asked to perform with the Texas Tech University choirs and the University Symphony Orchestra in the annual Orchestra/choir Scholarship Concerts.

It was after the 1987 scholarship concert that efforts were made to form a union between the civic and university forces. The Lubbock Civic Chorale and the Texas Tech Chorale Union merged into the University-Civic Chorale to provide musical interaction between Tech's college students, faculty and staff and people in the community. The result has been outstanding as it continues to act as an independent musical organization with both youthful enthusiasm and mature aspirations.

The combined forces created a chorale of substantial size to perform many of the major choral works with full orchestral accompaniment. Included in the Chorale's repertoire are such works as the Mozart's GRAND MASS IN C, Beethoven's NINTH SYMPHONY, and Haydn's CREATION.

The Director of Choral Activities at Texas Tech serves as the conductor of the ensemble, which changed its name to The Lubbock Chorale in October 1992. It is under the present conductor that the concert seasons have regularly included accompaniment by full orchestra on the majority of performances. Now, the Chorale performs major works with orchestra three times a year.

The Lubbock Chorale performs great choral masterworks at the highest attainable standards and provides a public service by bringing such music to the attention of the community.

The Chorale regularly performs with other organizations of national and international reputation both in and out of Lubbock. Also, the Chorale provides a meeting place for choral singers of compentences and achievement to further their musical education.
